A shot is as great as its lighting. Find a setting with multiple light sources—a bright light near the camera; a filling, ambient light that softens shadows; and a back light behind the subject that adds depth. Windows on sunny days often act as perfect on-the-go key and fill lights. Just turn on a lamp behind your subject for depth.

net life: high-tech biz for old-time photos

It's mobile va-va-voom for this photographer and makeup-artist team.
Three years ago, with work drying up during the worst of the recession, makeup artist Stacy Lande and photographer Carol Sheridan decided to start their own business. The two had previously collaborated on boudoir photography sessions for brides, and that inspired an idea: dolling up average gals in racy poses—and, voilà, Iconic Pinups was born!

This dynamic duo has since transformed scores of women into Iconic Pinups. “Carol and I shoot at our own homes, in sets that we’ve created,” Lande explains. “The customers can choose between mid-century retro at Carol’s house, which features a 1960s record wall, chaise lounge and pinktufted headboard, or my vintage house, with its old-fashioned kitchen and 1920sstyle bedroom.”

Lande and Sheridan use their smartphone and tablet, respectively, to manage their daily routine—from booking appointments to referencing makeup, hair and clothing possibilities for the budding pinups. “We’re just a couple of regular gals finding our way through developing a business,” Lande says. “The advances in technology, and our experiences on the AT&T network, have helped Iconic Pinups to flourish”—as has running daily deals on social networking discounting sites, such as LivingSocial and Groupon. “We are able to instantly redeem [customers’] vouchers using a scanner on the phone,” Lande says. “And we’re able to take their credit cards using Square. It is really a techno revolution for us!”
